I never felt at Home — Below –

I never felt at Home -- Below --I never felt at Home — Below —
And in the Handsome Skies
I shall not feel at Home — I know —
I don’t like Paradise —

Because it’s Sunday — all the time —
And Recess — never comes —
And Eden’ll be so lonesome
Bright Wednesday Afternoons —

If God could make a visit —
Or ever took a Nap —
So not to see us — but they say
Himself — a Telescope

Perennial beholds us —
Myself would run away
From Him — and Holy Ghost — and All —
But there’s the “Judgement Day”!

I’m saying every day

I'm saying every dayI’m saying every day
“If I should be a Queen, tomorrow” —
I’d do this way —
And so I deck, a little,

If it be, I wake a Bourbon,
None on me, bend supercilious —
With “This was she —
Begged in the Market place —
Yesterday.”

Court is a stately place —
I’ve heard men say —
So I loop my apron, against the Majesty
With bright Pins of Buttercup —
That not too plain —
Rank — overtake me —

And perch my Tongue
On Twigs of singing — rather high —
But this, might be my brief Term
To qualify —

Put from my simple speech all plain word —
Take other accents, as such I heard
Though but for the Cricket — just,
And but for the Bee —
Not in all the Meadow —
One accost me —

Better to be ready —
Than did next morn
Meet me in Aragon —
My old Gown — on —

And the surprised Air
Rustics — wear —
Summoned — unexpectedly —
To Exeter –

‘Tis Opposites — entice –

'Tis Opposites -- entice --‘Tis Opposites — entice —
Deformed Men — ponder Grace —
Bright fires — the Blanketless —
The Lost — Day’s face —

The Blind — esteem it be
Enough Estate — to see —
The Captive — strangles new —
For deeming — Beggars — play —

To lack — enamor Thee —
Tho’ the Divinity —
Be only
Me –

I tend my flowers for thee –

I tend my flowers for thee --I tend my flowers for thee —
Bright Absentee!
My Fuchsia’s Coral Seams
Rip — while the Sower — dreams —

Geraniums — tint — and spot —
Low Daisies — dot —
My Cactus — splits her Beard
To show her throat —

Carnations — tip their spice —
And Bees — pick up —
A Hyacinth — I hid —
Puts out a Ruffled Head —
And odors fall
From flasks — so small —
You marvel how they held —

Globe Roses — break their satin glake —
Upon my Garden floor —
Yet — thou — not there —
I had as lief they bore
No Crimson — more —

Thy flower — be gay —
Her Lord — away!
It ill becometh me —
I’ll dwell in Calyx — Gray —
How modestly — alway —
Thy Daisy —
Draped for thee!

Unto like Story — Trouble has enticed me –

Unto like Story -- Trouble has enticed me --Unto like Story — Trouble has enticed me —
How Kinsmen fell —
Brothers and Sister — who preferred the Glory —
And their young will
Bent to the Scaffold, or in Dungeons — chanted —
Till God’s full time —
When they let go the ignominy — smiling —
And Shame went still —

Unto guessed Crests, my moaning fancy, leads me,
Worn fair
By Heads rejected — in the lower country —
Of honors there —
Such spirit makes her perpetual mention,
That I — grown bold —
Step martial — at my Crucifixion —
As Trumpets — rolled —

Feet, small as mine — have marched in Revolution
Firm to the Drum —
Hands — not so stout — hoisted them — in witness —
When Speech went numb —
Let me not shame their sublime deportments —
Drilled bright —
Beckoning — Etruscan invitation —
Toward Light –

Many a phrase has the English language

Doubt Me! My Dim Companion! Many a phrase has the English language —
I have heard but one —
Low as the laughter of the Cricket,
Loud, as the Thunder’s Tongue —

Murmuring, like old Caspian Choirs,
When the Tide’s a’ lull —
Saying itself in new inflection —
Like a Whippoorwill —

Breaking in bright Orthography
On my simple sleep —
Thundering its Prospective —
Till I stir, and weep —

Not for the Sorrow, done me —
But the push of Joy —
Say it again, Saxton!
Hush — Only to me!

Delight is as the flight –

Delight is as the flight --Delight is as the flight —
Or in the Ratio of it,
As the Schools would say —
The Rainbow’s way —
A Skein
Flung colored, after Rain,
Would suit as bright,
Except that flight
Were Aliment —

“If it would last”
I asked the East,
When that Bent Stripe
Struck up my childish
Firmament —
And I, for glee,
Took Rainbows, as the common way,
And empty Skies
The Eccentricity —

And so with Lives —
And so with Butterflies —
Seen magic — through the fright
That they will cheat the sight —
And Dower latitudes far on —
Some sudden morn —
Our portion — in the fashion —
Done –
