The Months have ends -- the Years -- a knot --The Months have ends — the Years — a knot –
No Power can untie
To stretch a little further
A Skein of Misery –

The Earth lays back these tired lives
In her mysterious Drawers –
Too tenderly, that any doubt
An ultimate Repose –

The manner of the Children –
Who weary of the Day –
Themself — the noisy Plaything
They cannot put away –

Take your Heaven further on --Take your Heaven further on –
This — to Heaven divine Has gone –
Had You earlier blundered in
Possibly, e’en You had seen
An Eternity — put on –
Now — to ring a Door beyond
Is the utmost of Your Hand –
To the Skies — apologize –
Nearer to Your Courtesies
Than this Sufferer polite –
Dressed to meet You –

Heaven is so far of the MindHeaven is so far of the Mind
That were the Mind dissolved –
The Site — of it — by Architect
Could not again be proved –

‘Tis vast — as our Capacity –
As fair — as our idea –

The Morning after Woe --The Morning after Woe –
‘Tis frequently the Way –
Surpasses all that rose before –
For utter Jubilee –

As Nature did not care –
And piled her Blossoms on –
And further to parade a Joy
Her Victim stared upon –

The Birds declaim their Tunes –
Pronouncing every word
Like Hammers — Did they know they fell
Like Litanies of Lead –

On here and there — a creature –
They’d modify the Glee
To fit some Crucifixal Clef –
Some Key of Calvary –

The Wind didn't come from the Orchard -- today --The Wind didn’t come from the Orchard — today –
Further than that –
Nor stop to play with the Hay –
Nor joggle a Hat –
He’s a transitive fellow — very –
Rely on that –

If He leave a Bur at the door
We know He has climbed a Fir –
But the Fir is Where — Declare –
Were you ever there?

If He brings Odors of Clovers –
And that is His business — not Ours –
Then He has been with the Mowers –
Whetting away the Hours
To sweet pauses of Hay –
His Way — of a June Day –

If He fling Sand, and Pebble –
Little Boys Hats — and Stubble –
With an occasional Steeple –
And a hoarse “Get out of the way, I say,”
Who’d be the fool to stay?
Would you — Say –
Would you be the fool to stay?

Nature -- sometimes sears a Sapling --Nature — sometimes sears a Sapling –
Sometimes — scalps a Tree –
Her Green People recollect it
When they do not die –

Fainter Leaves — to Further Seasons –
Dumbly testify –
We — who have the Souls –
Die oftener — Not so vitally –

A Burdock -- clawed my Gown --A Burdock — clawed my Gown –
Not Burdock’s — blame –
But mine –
Who went too near
The Burdock’s Den –

A Bog — affronts my shoe –
What else have Bogs — to do –
The only Trade they know –
The splashing Men!
Ah, pity — then!

‘Tis Minnows can despise!
The Elephant’s — calm eyes
