I am alive — I guess —

I am alive I guessI am alive — I guess —
The Branches on my Hand
Are full of Morning Glory —
And at my finger’s end —

The Carmine — tingles warm —
And if I hold a Glass
Across my Mouth — it blurs it —
Physician’s — proof of Breath —

I am alive — because
I am not in a Room —
The Parlor — Commonly — it is —
So Visitors may come —

And lean — and view it sidewise —
And add “How cold — it grew” —
And “Was it conscious — when it stepped
In Immortality?”

I am alive — because
I do not own a House —
Entitled to myself — precise —
And fitting no one else —

And marked my Girlhood’s name —
So Visitors may know
Which Door is mine — and not mistake —
And try another Key —

How good — to be alive!
How infinite — to be
Alive — two-fold — The Birth I had —
And this — besides, in — Thee!

It was given to me by the Gods –

It was given to me by the Gods
It was given to me by the Gods —
When I was a little Girl —
They given us Presents most — you know —
When we are new — and small.
I kept it in my Hand —
I never put it down —
I did not dare to eat — or sleep —
For fear it would be gone —
I heard such words as “Rich” —
When hurrying to school —
From lips at Corners of the Streets —
And wrestled with a smile.
Rich! ‘Twas Myself — was rich —
To take the name of Gold —
And Gold to own — in solid Bars —
The Difference — made me bold –

For Death — or rather

For Death -- or ratherFor Death — or rather
For the Things ‘twould buy —
This — put away
Life’s Opportunity —

The Things that Death will buy
Are Room —
Escape from Circumstances —
And a Name —

With Gifts of Life
How Death’s Gifts may compare —
We know not —
For the Rates — lie Here –

I felt my life with both my hands

I felt my life with both my handsI felt my life with both my hands
To see if it was there —
I held my spirit to the Glass,
To prove it possibler —

I turned my Being round and round
And paused at every pound
To ask the Owner’s name —
For doubt, that I should know the Sound —

I judged my features — jarred my hair —
I pushed my dimples by, and waited —
If they — twinkled back —
Conviction might, of me —

I told myself, “Take Courage, Friend —
That — was a former time —
But we might learn to like the Heaven,
As well as our Old Home!”

The face I carry with me — last –

The face I carry with me -- last --The face I carry with me — last —
When I go out of Time —
To take my Rank — by — in the West —
That face — will just be thine —

I’ll hand it to the Angel —
That — Sir — was my Degree —
In Kingdoms — you have heard the Raised —
Refer to — possibly.

He’ll take it — scan it — step aside —
Return — with such a crown
As Gabriel — never capered at —
And beg me put it on —

And then — he’ll turn me round and round —
To an admiring sky —
As one that bore her Master’s name —
Sufficient Royalty!

I got so I could take his name

I got so I could take his nameI got so I could take his name —
Without — Tremendous gain —
That Stop-sensation — on my Soul —
And Thunder — in the Room —

I got so I could walk across
That Angle in the floor,
Where he turned so, and I turned — how —
And all our Sinew tore —

I got so I could stir the Box —
In which his letters grew
Without that forcing, in my breath —
As Staples — driven through —

Could dimly recollect a Grace —
I think, they call it “God” —
Renowned to ease Extremity —
When Formula, had failed —

And shape my Hands —
Petition’s way,
Tho’ ignorant of a word
That Ordination — utters —

My Business, with the Cloud,
If any Power behind it, be,
Not subject to Despair —
It care, in some remoter way,
For so minute affair
As Misery —
Itself, too vast, for interrupting — more –
