When Diamonds are a Legend,
And Diadems — a Tale –
I Brooch and Earrings for Myself,
Do sow, and Raise for sale –
And tho’ I’m scarce accounted,
My Art, a Summer Day — had Patrons –
Once — it was a Queen –
And once — a Butterfly –

I’m saying every day
“If I should be a Queen, tomorrow” –
I’d do this way –
And so I deck, a little,
If it be, I wake a Bourbon,
None on me, bend supercilious –
With “This was she –
Begged in the Market place –
Yesterday.”
Court is a stately place –
I’ve heard men say –
So I loop my apron, against the Majesty
With bright Pins of Buttercup –
That not too plain –
Rank — overtake me –
And perch my Tongue
On Twigs of singing — rather high –
But this, might be my brief Term
To qualify –
Put from my simple speech all plain word –
Take other accents, as such I heard
Though but for the Cricket — just,
And but for the Bee –
Not in all the Meadow –
One accost me –
Better to be ready –
Than did next morn
Meet me in Aragon –
My old Gown — on –
And the surprised Air
Rustics — wear –
Summoned — unexpectedly –
To Exeter –

Not probable — The barest Chance –
A smile too few — a word too much
And far from Heaven as the Rest –
The Soul so close on Paradise –
What if the Bird from journey far –
Confused by Sweets — as Mortals — are –
Forget the secret of His wing
And perish — but a Bough between –
Oh, Groping feet –
Oh Phantom Queen!

It sifts from Leaden Sieves –
It powders all the Wood.
It fills with Alabaster Wool
The Wrinkles of the Road –
It makes an Even Face
Of Mountain, and of Plain –
Unbroken Forehead from the East
Unto the East again –
It reaches to the Fence –
It wraps it Rail by Rail
Till it is lost in Fleeces –
It deals Celestial Vail
To Stump, and Stack — and Stem –
A Summer’s empty Room –
Acres of Joints, where Harvests were,
Recordless, but for them–
It Ruffles Wrists of Posts
As Ankles of a Queen –
Then stills its Artisans — like Ghosts –
Denying they have been –

The Robin’s my Criterion for Tune —
Because I grow — where Robins do —
But, were I Cuckoo born —
I’d swear by him —
The ode familiar — rules the Noon —
The Buttercup’s, my Whim for Bloom —
Because, we’re Orchard sprung —
But, were I Britain born,
I’d Daisies spurn —
None but the Nut — October fit —
Because, through dropping it,
The Seasons flit — I’m taught —
Without the Snow’s Tableau
Winter, were lie — to me —
Because I see — New Englandly —
The Queen, discerns like me —
Provincially —

A Mien to move a Queen –
Half Child — Half Heroine –
An Orleans in the Eye
That puts its manner by
For humbler Company
When none are near
Even a Tear –
Its frequent Visitor –
A Bonnet like a Duke –
And yet a Wren’s Peruke
Were not so shy
Of Goer by –
And Hands — so slight –
They would elate a Sprite
With Merriment –
A Voice that Alters — Low
And on the Ear can go
Like Let of Snow –
Or shift supreme –
As tone of Realm
On Subjects Diadem –
Too small — to fear –
Too distant — to endear –
And so Men Compromise
And just — revere –
