The sweetest Heresy received
That Man and Woman know –
Each Other’s Convert –
Though the Faith accommodate but Two –
The Churches are so frequent –
The Ritual — so small –
The Grace so unavoidable –
To fail — is Infidel –

I tend my flowers for thee –
Bright Absentee!
My Fuchsia’s Coral Seams
Rip — while the Sower — dreams –
Geraniums — tint — and spot –
Low Daisies — dot –
My Cactus — splits her Beard
To show her throat –
Carnations — tip their spice –
And Bees — pick up –
A Hyacinth — I hid –
Puts out a Ruffled Head –
And odors fall
From flasks — so small –
You marvel how they held –
Globe Roses — break their satin glake –
Upon my Garden floor –
Yet — thou — not there –
I had as lief they bore
No Crimson — more –
Thy flower — be gay –
Her Lord — away!
It ill becometh me –
I’ll dwell in Calyx — Gray –
How modestly — alway –
Thy Daisy –
Draped for thee!

Unto like Story — Trouble has enticed me –
How Kinsmen fell –
Brothers and Sister — who preferred the Glory –
And their young will
Bent to the Scaffold, or in Dungeons — chanted –
Till God’s full time –
When they let go the ignominy — smiling –
And Shame went still –
Unto guessed Crests, my moaning fancy, leads me,
Worn fair
By Heads rejected — in the lower country –
Of honors there –
Such spirit makes her perpetual mention,
That I — grown bold –
Step martial — at my Crucifixion –
As Trumpets — rolled –
Feet, small as mine — have marched in Revolution
Firm to the Drum –
Hands — not so stout — hoisted them — in witness –
When Speech went numb –
Let me not shame their sublime deportments –
Drilled bright –
Beckoning — Etruscan invitation –
Toward Light –

The Drop, that wrestles in the Sea—
Forgets her own locality—
As I—toward Thee—
She knows herself an incense small—
Yet small—she sighs—if All—is All—
How larger—be?
The Ocean—smiles—at her Conceit—
But she, forgetting Amphitrite—
Pleads—”Me”?

A Mien to move a Queen –
Half Child — Half Heroine –
An Orleans in the Eye
That puts its manner by
For humbler Company
When none are near
Even a Tear –
Its frequent Visitor –
A Bonnet like a Duke –
And yet a Wren’s Peruke
Were not so shy
Of Goer by –
And Hands — so slight –
They would elate a Sprite
With Merriment –
A Voice that Alters — Low
And on the Ear can go
Like Let of Snow –
Or shift supreme –
As tone of Realm
On Subjects Diadem –
Too small — to fear –
Too distant — to endear –
And so Men Compromise
And just — revere –

The Court is far away –
No Umpire — have I –
My Sovereign is offended –
To gain his grace — I’d die!
I’ll seek his royal feet –
I’ll say — Remember — King –
Thou shalt — thyself — one day — a Child –
Implore a larger — thing –
That Empire — is of Czars –
As small — they say — as I –
Grant me — that day — the royalty –
To intercede — for Thee –
