Good Morning -- Midnight --Good Morning — Midnight –
I’m coming Home –
Day — got tired of Me –
How could I — of Him?

Sunshine was a sweet place –
I liked to stay –
But Morn — didn’t want me — now –
So — Goodnight — Day!

I can look — can’t I –
When the East is Red?
The Hills — have a way — then –
That puts the Heart — abroad –

You — are not so fair — Midnight –
I chose — Day –
But — please take a little Girl –
He turned away!

The Grass so little has to do --The Grass so little has to do –
A Sphere of simple Green –
With only Butterflies to brood
And Bees to entertain –

And stir all day to pretty Tunes
The Breezes fetch along –
And hold the Sunshine in its lap
And bow to everything –

And thread the Dews, all night, like Pearls –
And make itself so fine
A Duchess were too common
For such a noticing –

And even when it dies — to pass
In Odors so divine –
Like Lowly spices, lain to sleep –
Or Spikenards, perishing –

And then, in Sovereign Barns to dwell –
And dream the Days away,
The Grass so little has to do
I wish I were a Hay –

Put up my lute!

Put up my lute!Put up my lute!
What of — my Music!
Since the sole ear I cared to charm –
Passive — as Granite — laps My Music –
Sobbing — will suit — as well as psalm!

Would but the “Memnon” of the Desert –
Teach me the strain
That vanquished Him –
When He — surrendered to the Sunrise –
Maybe — that — would awaken — them!

To die -- takes just a little while --To die — takes just a little while –
They say it doesn’t hurt –
It’s only fainter — by degrees –
And then — it’s out of sight –

A darker Ribbon — for a Day –
A Crape upon the Hat –
And then the pretty sunshine comes –
And helps us to forget –

The absent — mystic — creature –
That but for love of us –
Had gone to sleep — that soundest time –
Without the weariness –

Portraits are to daily facesPortraits are to daily faces
As an Evening West,
To a fine, pedantic sunshine –
In a satin Vest!
